About: The land of lakes and volcanos, Guatemala has a vast range of growing regions and an equivalent range of complex cups to match. Most of the farms in Guatemala are small, from 1-10 hectares, but there are also some larger estates. The most commonly cultivated coffee varieties are Bourbon, Typica, Pache, and Catuai. Farmers have the option to process the coffee at their homes if facilities and water allow for it or they can deliver cherry to a larger mill or farmers’ cooperative.
ASPROGUATE begins in 2014 lead by a group of organized producers located in Coban, Acatenango & Chimaltenango regions with the purpose to market quality coffees using fully organic practices. 55% of the farms are women owned
100 producers were aligned to create the association. Soon, other producers in nearby areas heard about the project’s success and joined the exponential growth of the association.
In 2016, offices in San Martin Jilotepeque were opened to centralize the operation in SMJ they have set up community gardens for food security as well as a list of other supports and education for the farms.
